We all love relaxing at home with a scented candle, but have you ever wondered how to make candles smell stronger? A characteristic of a good scented candle is that it has a fairly strong scent and a fair “throw” – this is how well a candle’s scent fills a room. But sometimes it can be a challenge to really capture the scent of your candle and you may not know what to do about it. Thankfully, there are a few ways to coax the scent out of a candle, so you can enjoy it to the fullest.

Why doesn’t my scented candle smell that strong?
If you’ve noticed that your candle doesn’t seem to give off much fragrance, there are a few factors that could be causing this and addressing some of these can pretty quickly result in a stronger smell when you’re enjoying your candle. Here are some of the most common reasons why the scent from your candle may be weak:

The candle does not burn long enough
Did you know that a candle emits more fragrance the longer it burns? This is because fragrance evaporates via the pool of melted wax that forms around the wick. As the candle continues to burn, the pool becomes larger – and with this larger surface area, more fragrance can evaporate into the air. If you extinguish your candle before the melted wax pool covers the entire surface of the candle, it will not smell as strong and can also lead to tunneling.

The light is not big enough for the room
It may be that the room you have placed your candle in is too large for the fragrance to fill it sufficiently. Especially if it has high ceilings or if it is a mezzanine apartment. It may also depend on where you have placed the light – e.g. if it is right near an open window or vent where the scent can easily escape.

The fragrance content is too low
If your poor scent experience has led you to search for “what are the strongest scented candles,” the problem may be that your candle doesn’t have enough scent to sufficiently evaporate and fill a room. Make sure you always choose high quality candles like Botanica candles.

Can the type of wax affect how a candle smells?
When it comes to finding the strongest scented candles, the type of wax used has a lot to do with it. Paraffin wax candles have more capacity to hold fragrance than natural wax candles, such as soy or beeswax. These natural waxes also have a slower burning time which results

in a less intense scent and throw. Learn more about the different types of light you can get.
